Introduction

The GILIS offers library and information science masters’ program which is located in central Taiwan, Taichung. The educational objectives of GILIS are to develop professional and management talents for libraries and information service organizations for cultivating students' information service literacy and capabilities. The three core courses of the program include: “Study of Library and Information Science,” “Introduction to Reference Resources & Services,” and “Research Methods.”

In addition to the required courses, our program takes a consideration of all students’ academic knowledge in the bachelor level. Based on students' academic background, expertise, and research interests, we provide guidance on elective subjects to get insight into libraries’ interdisciplinary professions and services. Specifically, the curriculum planning develops towards several directions, including information acquisition & organization, information resources & services, information technologies & digital Libraries, e-learning, digital humanities, interactive design, cultural architecture & curation. We aim to enhance students’ interdisciplinary abilities in the information area based on their professional knowledge in library.

The curriculum design of the GILIS program not only focuses on theorical studies but also considers teaching practicum. In school, the laboratories of digital humanities and information science were established for training students’ abilities of information application. We not only organize field trips to visit libraries, museums, or information organizations in the semester but also provide students internship in summer. Students have opportunities to work with in-services librarian to get know the technical services, public services, reference services and management practices in library.

The metaphor of our education philosophy is an ORCHIDS: Organization, Research, Collaboration, Humanity, Innovation, Digitalization, and Services.
