On average, how many years does it take for students of Graduate Institute of Library and Information Center to graduate?

A

On average, students from Library and Information Center major take 2-3 years while students from irrelevant majors take 2.5-3.5 years.

What is the maximum years of study and of voluntary suspension of NCHU Graduate Institute of Library and Information Center?

A

Maximum yearsof study is 4 years for students in master's program,and 5 years forstudents in in-service master's program. Maximum years of voluntary suspension is 2 years.

What is the advantage of studying in the Graduate Institute of Library and Information Center (GILIC)?

A

NCHU Graduate Institute of Library and Information Center, GILIC, has been established since 1999. It passes down its cause by promoting library and information studies in Taiwan and fostering professionals interested in this field. GILIC not only puts much effort in training new generations of talents but also aims to become an important institution for people interested in this field. In terms of curriculum design, teacher recruitment and research development, GILIC also puts its emphasis on training senior talents.

How’sthe study room for GILIC students?

A

There are 34 computers (32 personal computers and 2 public access computers), 3 copy machines and 1 scanner in study room 933 for first year graduate students.

Where can I buy a copy card?

A

We provide copy cards in the general office of our department. Each card is NT$100 without deposit.

Sometimes I went to the study room quite early but found that the doors were locked. How do I apply for the key to the study room?

A

You can go to the general office of our department to apply for the key to the study room by filling out an application sheet and paying NT$100 of deposit.

How do I apply for scholarship?

A

Our department provide scholarship, support fund and incentives to students. First and second year students who ranked first in class can get NT$3000 of scholarship in the next semester. Students who assist teachers with instructional responsibilities can get NT$4000 of support fund per month during semester period. Students who help their classmates can get learning service incentives according to the levels of their performance.

What is the advantage of studying in the Graduate Institute of Library and Information Center (GILIC)?

A

According to NCHU Credit Transfer Regulations, students can only apply for credit transfer one time and should apply for it during the course selection period in the first semester. Students who take courses in master’s program or in-service master’s program of NCHU or other universities in recent five years and score over 70 can apply for credit transfer. Students may transfer no more than 12 credits.  

Non-Library and Information Science major students who have two years of work experience in library can apply to waive “Library and Information Science Practices” by filling out the Application for Waiving Library and Information Science Practices. What kind of jobs I can get after I graduate? How’s the employment statistics for our alumni?

A

According to the statistics of our department, most of our alumni, about76.7%, work in library. 8.2% of our alumni work in school, 6.8% in information industry, 5.5% in other industries, and 2.7% in cultural organizations. The employment rate of our graduates is 90%. You can say that nearly all of our students find jobs immediately after they graduate.

Are there any off-campus visit programs and keynote speeches?

A

Besides from several off-campus visit programs every semester, we also hold keynote speeches in our class. General office of GILIC will send emails to update the latest activities and you can sign up the activities through the link we send you.

Is it mandatory that students do internship in library? How do I apply for an internship?

A

Non-Library and Information Science major students should take “Library and Information Science Practices” in the first semester of the second school year (internship will be taken place in the summer vacation of the first school year). Students with two years of work experiences in library do not have to take this course.


Internship institutions do not have to be a library. You can do internship in other institutions such as a science museum or an art museum. There are two ways to apply for an internship. You can go to the internship institutions which are on the internship list issued by our department or you can go to the institutions that are not on the internship list after you get the approval of your mentor.

When is the deadline to find a thesis advisor?

A

You can talk to professors any time before the end of the first school year. And we strongly suggest you talk to them before you decide your thesis advisor.

You can ask your mentor how to select courses, and ask your senior classmates to help you with your school work.

Students in master’s program may enroll for a maximum of 15 credits per semester. Students in in-service master’s program may enroll for a maximum of 10 credits. If you have any other questions, check with your mentor and graduate chair.

If I have any questions about the courses and my school work, who should I go to?

A

You can ask your mentor how to select courses, and ask your senior classmates to help you with your school work.

I don’t know what courses I should take.

A

We have mentors (not thesis advisors)who can help youselect the courses you need. And no matter you majored in Library and Information Science or not, we strongly suggest that you talk to your mentor before you select your courses.

Is it hard to apply for dormitory? How about renting a room outside of school?

A

First year students in master’s and doctoral programs should apply for accommodation by manual allocation. While second year students in master’s and doctoral programs should apply for accommodation by online allocation. The results of online or manual allocation will not be affected by the location of your home. And the chance to be selected is very high.

Where to eat?

A

There are some restaurants and convenient markets  near to our school (College of Liberal Art ) such as All Pass Restaurant and Hi-Life.
